The Long Walk Home  - January 2021

The Long Walk Home is a virtual event organised by St. Patrick's Society Singapore and is open to members and non-members alike.

In January 2021, 130 of us started walking the more than 17,000km from Merlion Park in Singapore to Heuston Station Dublin. This event is a group event where every step counts towards the groups aim of walking home together. Enabling the Irish Community to come together with a common goal.

Check out our virtual Travel Log, see where we have been and how we are getting on.

The estimated size of the Irish community living outside Ireland is approximately 1.47 million people. December 2019 around 1.2 million people flew into and out of Dublin airport over Christmas. 2020 has been hard on everyone and as Irish people living abroad it has meant that a lot of us have been unable to go home this year to see family, St. Patrick’s Society Singapore is no different.

We have decided that if we can't fly, then we will walk home. Our latest event is a virtual walk from over 17,000 km from Merlion Park in Singapore to Heuston Station Dublin, and from there you can catch the train home. It’s a long way but we will walk it together. Joining our mission means each step you take will be counted in the groups tally, so it doesn’t matter if you walk 1 km or 100 km, it's our combined steps that will take us home, as the saying goes

Ní neart go cur le chéile – We are stronger together.

Join with your family and friends and get out and active together while being apart. To mark the event, we will have medals for all participants. You don’t have to be in Singapore to join in but there will be an additional cost of postage for the memorabilia.

Part of St. Patrick’s Society ethos is that we support and donate to charities here in Singapore. For this event we have focused on Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore (RDA Singapore). and will be donating all profits from the event to the charity.

RDA Singapore provides equine-assisted therapy (also known as hippotherapy) to children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. They are the only charity in Singapore that provides this therapy and sessions are given free of charge.

For almost 40 Years Riding for the Disabled in Singapore has given its heart to helping more than 7,000 disabled children and adults through the benefits of the therapy that their horses and ponies lovingly provide.  Horses provide a means for physical therapy and cognitive improvement in a unique format that's fun, exhilarating, and sometimes has the power to change a person’s perspective on life. The contact with the animal is a powerful experience, and the strong bond that is sometimes experienced often has a profound, uplifting effect on people who are troubled or suffering.

Riding for the Disabled is established in many countries around the world, including Ireland, providing a relief and both physical and mental therapy to thousands of disabled people. RDA Singapore is entirely funded through donations and as part of our Long Walk Home Event the St. Patrick’s Society Singapore have agreed to donate any funds raised from the event to this worthy charity.
